Jennie Lee became the first Minister for the Arts in 1964.

The Jennie Lee Institute is a new independent platform exploring what a progressive cultural policy means now.

It’s needed because

1.  money for art and culture is largely spent in the same ways as it always has been
2.  debate is limited by lobbying, managerialism and funding cuts   
3.  Britain is no longer producing dangerous art and music
4.  progressive cultural policy is about more than access to the arts
